| The Ghana National
Association of Teachers Ladies Society organized its first Round
Table conference from 6th to 7th January 2006 at the Teachers
Hall Accra under the theme “Twenty years of GNAT-LAS in
the mainstream GNAT, the way forward”. Over
200 delegates and executives of GNAT-LAS drawn from all the
regions and districts of Ghana attended the conference. Also
in attendance were the acting President, General Secretary
and other executives of GNAT and representatives from various
departments, agencies and associations.
The gathering was preceded by a 3 hours awareness
march through some principal streets of Accra by the delegates.
The conference was formally opened by the Minister for Women
and Children; Hajia Alima Mahama. Mrs. Mary Amankwa, Chairperson
of GNAT, Greater Accra Region Chaired the opening session.
Session one
In her welcome address, The Gender coordinator, Madam Helena
Awurasa gave a brief history of the society and highlighted
on its key objectives as:
• Strengthening the female teachers participation in
GNAT
• Improving upon the performance of the female teacher
in the classroom and in society at large
• Help them assume leadership roles in social, educational
and political spheres
She recounted some of the attainments of GNAT-LAS.
Key among these were the development of a gender policy (which
sets out a rational for GNAT-LAS) that have been adopted by
the National executive of GNAT; the training of 500 women
organizers by the society which eventually strengthened and
sharpened the skills of over 8,000 women; the printing and
donation of 6,000 supplementary readers, stationary, school
uniforms and writing materials to 30 schools in deprived communities;
the development and printing of six thousand copies of educational
brochures on child labour, child trafficking, violence at
school, cervical cancer, breast cancer and girl child education
which were distributed to GNAT members and the general public;
regular breast cancer screening and voluntary counseling and
testing for HIV and the setting up of counseling centers in
six districts and at the head quarters for the teachers; the
formulation of an HIV/AIDS work place policy, etc
She emphasized that the success of GNAT-LAS
is demonstrated by the confidence and knowledge shown by the
delegates and expressed her hope that similar conferences
would be held at the regional and district levels.
There were solidarity messages from Ghana Registered
Nurses Association, Ghana National Association of Teachers,
Teachers and Education Workers Union, GNATOC GNAT-LAS, Trades
Union Congress, Association of Women Lawyers in Africa, Domestic
Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service
and the Department of Women of the Ministry of Women and Children.
In their messages, they congratulated GNAT-LAS on their twenty
years success and pledged their unflinching support to their
quest to empower the female teacher and improve upon their
lot. They called on the female teacher to be involved in the
development of the women in society at large.
The Guest Speaker Mrs. Georgina Baiden in her
keynote address expressed her gratitude for the development
of GNAT-LAS over the years. She spelt out the purpose of the
gathering as; taking stock of GNAT-LAS activities and setting
targets for the next four years while adopting strategies
to make the female teacher more effective in her work. She
reminded the gathering of the current successes chalked by
women world over especially on the political spheres in Liberia
and Germany. She traced the history of GNAT-LAS and narrated
chronology leading to the formation of the Society. She recounted
that as women were increasingly gaining recognition for their
contribution to the world of work, awareness continued to
grow on the need to eliminate all forms of discrimination
against women whiles improving on their
