organized and attended many National and International Programmes
during the period under review
INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMMES
The Promotion of Women in Education (PWE) organized a Sub-Regional
Forum on the Status of Women in the ECOWAS Countries for eleven
(11) countries in Ibadan, Nigeria from 11th to 14th February
2002. The Workshop was under the theme “Partnership
on the Improvement of the Status of Women in the ECOWAS Countries”.
More than thirty participants participated. Participating
Countries included Ghana, Sierra Leone, Cote d’ Ivoire,
Guinea, Benin, Gambia, Niger, Mali, Togo, Senegal, Nigeria
and Liberia. Ghana presented three participants including
two GNAT-LAS activists. The National Gender Coordinator presented
a paper on it.
2.0 GENDER WORKSHOP
The GNAT-LAS participated in the first ever Gender Workshop,
which was organized by the Gender Development Centre at Abokobi,
Accra. The theme for the workshop was “ Gender, A living
reality” at Abokobi in Accra. Two activists of GNAT
– LAS: Helena Awurusa; National Gender Coordinator and
Rebecca Larbi, former East Akyem District GNAT- LAS Coordinator
attended the workshop.
3.0 SUB REGIONAL PWE TRAINING WORKSHOP
IN FREETOWN-SIERRA LEONE
Sierra Leone hosted a Sub-Regional Workshop in Freetown from
11th to 15th November 2002. This Sub-Regional Workshop, which
was organized by the Promotion of Women in Education (PWE)
Regional Office in Lome, Togo, was to give participants Advance
Leadership Training. The theme for the Workshop was “Enhancing
Female Union Leaders Capacities”The
National Coordinator for Gender Programmes Miss Helena Awurusa
represented the PWE Regional Coordinator at the workshop.
3.0 SUB-REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON PRE-UNIVERSITY
EDUCATION IN EASTERN AFRICA-NAIROBI, KENYA
Education International, Africa Region organised
a four- day Sub-Regional Workshop on Pre-University Education
for eleven countries in Eastern Africa from 24th to 29th September,
2003 in Nairobi, Kenya. The theme for the workshop was “Promotion
of Pre-University Education in Eastern Africa”. The
workshop objectives were:
• To discuss the challenges of enrolling all children
in schools via the multiple shift system
• To deliberate on the purposes of multi-shift schooling
as well as its advantages and disadvantages
• To discuss the role of teachers and their organizations
in the planning and running of multi- shift schooling
• To develop union policies on improvement of access
and equity
The National Coordinator attended and presented a Paper on
the topic “Pre-University Education, Bridging the Gender
Gap”.

Two GNAT–LAS Activists – National

PWE LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR TEWU
MEMBERS
GNAT in collaboration with PWE and CTF organized two separate
Leadership Training Workshops for TEWU Women in Education
for the Southern sector – 13th to 16th July 2003 in
Accra and Northern sector from 11th to 24th July 2004 in Tamale.
The workshops were under the theme “ Development Of
Women in Administration in the Education Sector”.
The aim of the project was to increase by 30% the number of
women in Administration in the education sector to leadership
positions. It was also envisaged that by the end of the project,
80 participants would undergo training in Information Communication
Technology, Administration, Time and Stress Management, Book
Keeping and Accounting and Communication Skills. This would
enable them vie for higher positions.
Seventy-nine participants benefited from both workshops.
