REGIONAL PROJECTS

ASHANTI REGION:
The region did a follow up workshops on the national workshops organized in the region. Forty five (45) activists were trained. Some districts also organized series of other programs like Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening,

Reorganizing and Restructuring of Dormant Districts:
Antoakrom; Amansie West, Kwabre District/Local, Sekyere East- Kumawu, Afiduase, Bosumtwe Atima Kwanwoma, Kuntanase Local, Akumadan, Nkenkasu, and Offinso districts embarked on reorganization and restructuring of their societies.

Inauguration/Celebration
• Adansi West, Sekyere West and East, Tepa, Manso Adubia and Amansie West districts inaugurated their societies in 2003 and March 2004)

Donations
• Sixty (60) Needy pupils were given stationery, school uniforms, writing materials by Asem Local Branch in September 2003
• Kumasi Metro Branch donated school bags, stationery and writing materials to needy pupils

2. UPPER EAST REGION
GNAT-LAS membership is about one thousand eight hundred and fifty six (1,856) in the Upper East Region. The region replicated workshops that were organized by the Gender Desk in all districts in the region

Regional and district Workshops
With the help of an NGO (SEND FOUNDATION WEST AFRICA) One-day workshop was organized for all districts in the region with the following objectives;
a. To Review the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy
b. Sensitize members on Gender issues and policy implementation
c. To revive GNAT-LAS in the dormant districts

Bongo District
1. An HIV/AIDS programme was organized to educate members on the role of members in HIV/AIDS prevention. The district GNAT-LAS also inaugurated their GNAT-AS. The society is also constructing a Conference Hall
Bawku West
A female from Zebilla in the Bawku West District Miss Charlotte Azurago won the National Best Teacher Award. This is a challenge to all female teachers to work hard and be effective on the job

Bolgatanga District
The Bolga GNAT-LAS won the Regional Gino Cooking Competition.

3. UPPER WEST REGION: PROGRAMMES
The Regional and Assistant Regional Secretary and the Regional Coordinator visited all five districts to revitalize the society. Workshops were organized;
• To review the draft Gender policy
• Review the GNAT-LAS Constitution.
• To educate members of HIV/AIDS
• To create awareness on Breast Cancer.

Wa, Lawra, Jirapa, Nadowli and Tumu districts made donations to hospitals and School for the deaf inmates. The Wa district GNAT-LAS organized an Excursion.

4. EASTERN REGION PROGRAMMES
The period under review saw many regional and district activities. The region was privileged to host a national programme organized by the Gender Desk for Regional Coordinators, Chairpersons and GNAT-LAS Executives in 2003 to review the GNAT-LAS Constitution. The Gender Desk also organized another workshop for grassroots women in East Akyim-Kibi on Conditions of Service of Teachers and Girl-Child Education in the same year.

Regional Level Activities
• Six Regional Executive meetings and council meetings were held within the period under review. The aims of these workshops were to strategize and also help solve emerging problems from the districts.
• Eighteen female teachers drawn from the fifteen districts were trained In Creative Writing in 2004.
• The region also organized workshop on HIV/AIDS and Women in Unions for all District GNAT-LAS Coordinators and some activists

District Activities
Many major activities took place in most of the districts as below
Health Issues
Akuapem North, Manya-Krobo and Suhum/Kraboa- Coalter districts organized talks on Breast Cancer Awareness and Screening for Members, Students and Community Women

The East Akim district presented three bags of used clothing to Sunrise FM Station at Koforidua for distribution to needy people. The New Juabin branch of the society presented twenty (20) brilliant but needy pupils with school uniforms, bags and writing materials. The Manya-Krobo and New Juabin GNAT-LAS visited the Akuse, Atua, Agormanya and Koforidua hospitals and donated various items and cash to inmates

Celebrations and excursions
In 2002, East Akim celebrated its first anniversary and crowned it with a grand durbar at Tafo. New Juaben marked the World Teachers’ Day Celebration in 2003. Manya-krobo district crowned weeklong activities on the International Women’s Day Celebration in 2004.

Most Districts organized and went to selected places of interest. Some of the Places visited were Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, Assin Manso, Kakum Forest and Lome, Togo

BRONG AHAFO REGION PROGRAMMES
Regional Programmes
The Region organized Promotion classes for Teachers preparing for interviews and most females took part. The outcome of this reflected in the results of 2002 and 2003 Promotion interview results, as most of the female teachers were successful. Most female teachers were also encouraged to join the distant learning education programme

District Programmes
The Gender Desk organized a workshop on Conditions of service for teachers for GNAT-LAS activists in Kintampo. This was replicated at the grassroots levels by the district Secretariat.

Activities organized at the district level included HIV/AIDS education, Workshops on income-generating activities and excursions. Sunyani, Atebubu and Berekum inaugurated their societies

GREATER ACCRA REGION
The Gender Desk organized two leadership-training workshops and one workshop on domestic violence for the Greater Accra Region. 100 women benefited from these workshops. Two workshops were also organized for Tema and Dodowa districts on Conditions of Service and HIV/AIDS. Eighty participants participated
Regional Workshops
a. Education took place in all districts on the ‘Cap 30’ Pension scheme
b. Breast Cancer
c. Workshop on Strategic Planning by (SHARPU CLUSTA-GAIT) an NGO on how to plan a business
d. Seminar on GNAT-LAS Structure and Project Planning.

Dangbe West and Ga District
The GNAT-LAS in these districts has entered into Batik Tie and Dye production and snail rearing. The Ga district also organized sponsored walks, athletics and sports
In all more than three thousand 3,000 women were sensitized in the Greater Accra region

NORTHERN REGION
District Activities
GNAT-LAS activities in the districts included HIV/AIDS, Reproductive Health and Sanitation, Talks on ‘Breaking the Silence’ for JSS pupils, route matches, march past and Gala Matches to mark the Independence celebrations and the Teachers Day celebration.
Some of the Districts Networked with other women’s groups like NCWD, International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Action Aid Ghana, SEND Foundation, ibis etc.
Salaga and other district GNAT-LAS are involved in income generating activities.

VOLTA REGION
The National Secretariat; Gender Desk organized two regional workshops for one hundred district women organizers and activists in the region in 2002 and 2005 on conditions of service for teachers and leadership training.

District Activities
. Activities in the districts included restructuring, reactivating and reconstitution of the districts GNAT-LAS. The objective was to lift the dormant societies and make them proactive. Strategies used included seminars, workshops, talks/lectures, excursions and income-generating activities. The Regional Secretariat organized an HIV/AIDS education for district women organizers

Kpando, Kajebi and Ho Districts
Workshops were organized on
• The lady teachers’ Rights and Responsibilities
• Intestate Succession Law (PNDC Law 111)
• Income generating activities
• Excursions and visits
• Stress and Time Management
• Girl Child Education

Donations
Kpando and Ho District GNAT-LAS donated used clothing, soap and antiseptic to Ho Regional hospital, and Volta FM

9. WESTERN REGION
The birth of GNAT-LAS in the region gingered up the females to actively participate in the programmes and activities of GNAT
Regional Programmes
The Regional Secretariat organized two separate workshops for sixty GNAT-LAS members from very deprived areas. In each segment, thirty participants were invited for three days.

Jomoro District
In 2003, the GNAT Headquarters organized a one-day seminar for forty grassroots women at New Nzulezo in the Mpata Local branch. The theme for the workshop was “Strengthening Women’s front in GES and GNAT”.
The Jomoro district, which is one of the GNAT pilot districts for HIV/AIDS Prevention Campaign, is deep in HIV/AIDS sensitization for Pupils, Students, Teachers and Community Members. More than one thousand (1,000) people have been sensitized in the district. A counselling Unit has been opened for teachers and Students at the District GNAT Secretariat, Half/Assini.

Wassa West/Tarkwa and Ahanta West branches
The Wassa West, one of the most vibrant GNAT-LAS branches undertook a clean-up exercise at the Government Hospital at Tarkwa, and donated some items to the Children’s Ward. They inaugurated their branch in 2003. Ahanta West branch also inaugurated their society.

Domestic Violence Bill
Three Bistricts; Nzema East, Wassa West, and Bibiani Anhwiaso-Bekwai organized one- day workshops in their various districts on the draft Domestic Violence Bill. These workshops sensitized over five hundred (500) members.

CENTRAL REGION
The National Gender Desk organized two workshops in 2002 and 2004 for District Women Organizers and Activists from the region. These workshops were replicated in the districts by the regional secretariat.

Assin Foso
Assin Foso inaugurated their society in 2003. This attracted many important dignitaries like the President of GNAT, the General Secretary of GNAT, the Director, Girl Child Education at the Ghana Education Service Headquarters, the National Coordinator for Gender Programmes, GNAT and many others. The aim was to reactivate and sensitize their members on emerging issues

7. Production of Supplementary Readers and Brochures
8. Establishment of societies for unemployed youth in four districts
9. Donation of six thousand (6,000) Supplementary Readers in 30 deprived schools in Ghana

CHALLENGES FOR GNAT-LAS

1. Inadequate Funding for GNAT-LAS programmes at the District and Regional Levels
2. Communication Gap (Dissemination of information about GNAT-LAS within the Union)
3. Inadequate and inappropriate report writing
4. Inadequate Research on members
5. Difficulty in obtaining permission for meetings during working hours
6. Lack of child care facilities
7. Bridging the gap between intentions, policy and implementation
8. Male chauvinism
9. The impact of HIV/AIDS on female teachers
